BIOGRAPHY
Lucía Zicos is an orchestral conductor who combines intellectual depth, artistic leadership, and a contemporary perspective on musical practice. She holds a Doctorate in Music from the Catholic University of Argentina. Her research on performance traditions in Il trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi reflects a line of work that integrates critical thought and stage practice within a unified artistic approach.
Her conducting is distinguished by conceptual clarity, expressive intensity, and a sound architecture of strong technical command. She trained with Guillermo Scarabino (Argentina), Thüring Bräm (Switzerland), Milen Nachev (Bulgaria), Günther Schuller (Germany), and Diego Masson (France), and was selected by Benjamin Zander to participate in his London Masterclasses at the Royal Academy of Music. This diverse training fostered a broad and flexible approach to the symphonic and operatic repertoire.
Winner of the Second National Opera Competition (San Juan, Argentina), she has conducted more than a dozen operatic titles and led productions at internationally renowned venues such as the Teatro Argentino de La Plata, Teatro Avenida, the Dartington Festival (United Kingdom), the Sofia Opera (Bulgaria), and the International Summer Opera Festival (Czech Republic). In 2023, she conducted the premiere of Secretos del Árbol by María Suárez, and in 2025 she opened the opera season at the Teatro Argentino with Estaba la madre by Luis Bacalov.
Her versatility enables her to move seamlessly from the grand Romantic repertoire to contemporary creation, leading both large-scale stage productions and chamber projects, as well as interdisciplinary initiatives. She has conducted ensembles such as the Argentine National Symphony Orchestra, the Resident Orchestra of the Teatro Argentino de La Plata, the Chilean Chamber Orchestra, the Hradec Králové Philharmonic Orchestra, the North Bohemian Orchestra, and the Washington University Orchestra, among others.
She is also deeply engaged in pedagogy and social impact. She served as Principal Conductor of the Buenos Aires City Symphonic Band, Assistant Conductor of the Teatro Colón Academic Orchestra—where she conducted symphonic concerts and assisted in the opera season—and Principal Guest Conductor of the Argentine National Music Orchestra. Her commitment to education and equity is reflected in her work with youth orchestras and in her participation as guest conductor at the inaugural concert of the Alaíde Foppa Women’s Youth Symphony Orchestra (Guatemala), supported by UNESCO and UN Women.
In the recording field, she served as music director for Ausencias (Latin Grammy Award, 2014) and Mágica y Misteriosa (Latin Grammy Award, 2018), both featuring music by Argentine composer Claudia Montero, consolidating her connection with contemporary Latin American creation. Recognized by the Argentine Association of Music Critics as “Revelation Conductor” (2019) and nominated in 2023 among the leading Argentine conductors—becoming the first woman to achieve this distinction—Lucía Zicos is today positioned as a key figure in the symphonic and operatic scene of her generation.
She currently teaches at the Faculty of Arts and Musical Sciences of the Catholic University of Argentina and at the “Manuel de Falla” Superior Conservatory, directs the Ensamble Ecléctico project, and is regularly invited by institutions to lead advanced training programs.
In 2025, she made her debut at Mexico’s Palacio de Bellas Artes with the opera Cuauhtemoctzin by Aniceto Ortega and Samuel Máynez Champion, also presented before a large audience at Mexico City’s Zócalo. In 2026, she will undertake a tour across Mexico and Ecuador, alongside new engagements in Argentina.
With a career in expansion and a strong artistic identity, Lucía Zicos embodies a form of musical leadership that engages with tradition while projecting toward the future.
